Aside from finding accommodations, many Hong Kongers' priority upon moving to the UK is getting a car. Living outside London, not having a driving license is extremely inconvenient, so whenever they meet up with friends, they secretly hope for a lift.
Most Hong Kongers I've met are willing to offer friends a ride. Regarding hitchhiking, drivers often don't mind covering the fuel costs and sometimes even go the extra mile. As passengers without private cars, we sometimes overlook the additional burden on the drivers.
A few years back, people joked about Hong Kongers frequently hitching "democratic rides," attending June 4th vigils and July 1st marches whenever possible, and eventually hitching a ride to the UK. Similarly, after hitching democratic rides for so many years, who would have thought about the democratic drivers' fuel expenses? Being wanted under a red notice? Serving a 48-month sentence? Going into exile? Committing suicide or jumping off buildings?
Arriving in the UK, there are few drivers left. Do we still have democratic rides to catch? Or perhaps you can also become a democratic driver and join the path back to the revitalization of Hong Kong?
