Discovering that Agnes Chow has managed to leave Hong Kong to study in Canada brings relief and happiness to many Hongkongers. Actions that seem ordinary, such as emigrating or advancing in education, are extraordinarily valuable for some. It's astonishing to realize that, after overcoming numerous hurdles, she has finally attained true freedom.
Yet, in Hong Kong, many voices for justice remain imprisoned or under house arrest, with the majority of the individuals in the Hong Kong 47 case having been behind bars for over two years. For us Hongkongers abroad, we have to keep advocating for them, supporting them, and ensuring their stories of injustice are heard worldwide.
It's heartbreaking to consider the numerous young Hongkongers living in turmoil during what should be their most vibrant years. Hearing about young people who have fled due to various reasons, some who have left their university courses or even high school unfinished, one has to wonder about the extent of their hardships. Government refugee subsidies are insufficient, forcing them to seek various means to support themselves. I remember a young person jokingly saying to me, "One has to eat their bun, right?"
Despite reports of individuals being granted refugee status, many young people are still stuck in a lengthy waiting process. Some young people eligible for a BNO visa are also struggling with the UK's complex visa application procedures.
Hearing others discuss job hunting and driving tests, I cannot imagine the feelings of those Hongkongers who have waited over a year to have their refugee status approved. And what about their interrupted education? I've heard stories of young individuals who, despite receiving refugee status and beginning university courses, had to withdraw due to a lack of tuition fees.
The sacrifices made by Hongkongers, in life, freedom, and prospects, are immense. Our current tranquillity is built on the sacrifices of our predecessors. In an era flooded with information, I still wish for us to remember them and, in our comfort, not to forget those persecuted for the sake of Hong Kong and justice. May the Lord remember them, for as the scripture says, " Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
